E. K. Nyame

1927 – 1977

The father of guitar-band highlife

Landmark is level 2 of 5 in the Ghana Hall of Fame: a first, or the pre-eminent figure of their generation in this country. See how the levels work.

Why they are here

He took highlife out of the dance halls and into Twi guitar-band music that ordinary Ghanaians could actually sing along to. Nkrumah took his band on state visits.

E. K. Nyame is regarded as the father of Ghanaian guitar-band highlife, the form that carried the music into the concert party tradition and into everyday Ghanaian life.

His band travelled with Kwame Nkrumah on state business, and his funeral in 1977 was among the largest the country had seen for a musician.
