Born at Peki in the Volta Region in 1899, Ephraim Amu is regarded as the father of Ghana's art-music tradition and its greatest composer of religious choral music and patriotic song.
From the 1920s he composed a great number of hymns and patriotic works in Ewe and Akan. Yɛn Ara Asaase Ni, written in 1929, is treated as Ghana's second national anthem and is sung on national occasions.
