Asked to hand his kingdom over as a protectorate and to give up the Golden Stool, he refused both. The British deported him to the Seychelles and kept him there for twenty-eight years.
Prempeh I was Asantehene when the British demanded that Asante accept status as a colonial protectorate and surrender the Golden Stool. He refused, and was arrested.
He was deported to the Seychelles in 1896 and held there until 1924 — twenty-eight years in exile. Allowed home at last, he was permitted only the title of Kumasehene, the British declining to restore him as Asantehene.
