Prince Kofi Amoabeng

born 1952

Built UT Bank from a one-room lending outfit into a listed Ghanaian bank

Distinguished is level 3 of 4 in the Ghana Hall of Fame: sustained excellence over a career, widely honoured at home. See how the levels work.

Why they are here

A former army officer who started lending money out of a single office in 1997 and built it into UT Bank — a listed Ghanaian bank with branches nationwide, and the best-known indigenous banking story of its generation.

Prince Kofi Amoabeng served as an officer in the Ghana Armed Forces before leaving for business. In 1997 he and Joseph Nsonamoah started Unique Trust, a small financial services outfit lending to traders whom the established banks would not touch, on the promise of a decision within twenty-four hours.

It grew into UT Financial Services, then UT Bank, listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange, with a presence across the country and a subsidiary in Nigeria. For a decade Amoabeng was the most visible indigenous banker in Ghana and a fixture of business-school teaching on African enterprise. He stepped down as chief executive in 2015.
