Born in November 1949, Samuel Esson Jonah became chief executive of Ashanti Goldfields in 1986 and oversaw its growth from one mine into a multinational.
In 1996 Ashanti became the first operating African company to list on the New York Stock Exchange. He later served as chancellor of the University of Cape Coast.
