Vida Anim

born 1983

Ghana's leading woman sprinter

Landmark is level 2 of 4 in the Ghana Hall of Fame: a first that opened a door, or the pre-eminent figure of their generation in this country. See how the levels work.

Why they are here

Ghana's foremost woman sprinter of her generation, a three-time Olympian who held the national records over 100 and 200 metres for the best part of two decades.

Vida Anim ran for Ghana at the Olympic Games in 2000, 2004 and 2008, over 100 metres, 200 metres and in the relay.

Her national records β€” 11.11 seconds for the 100 metres and 22.63 for the 200, both set in 2006 β€” stood for many years and put her among the fastest women Africa produced in that period. She won medals at the All-Africa Games and reached world championship semi-finals, competing against fields from countries with vastly more athletics money than Ghana had.

She is the successor in Ghanaian sprinting to Alice Annum and the reason a generation of Ghanaian girls took the event seriously.
