Alero Olympio

1959 – 2005

Architect of radical ecologies

Distinguished is level 3 of 4 in the Ghana Hall of Fame: sustained excellence over a career, widely honoured at home. See how the levels work.

Why they are here

She built in earth and local materials when nobody else would, and argued for environmental sustainability in African architecture decades before it was fashionable.

Alero Olympio was a Ghanaian architect who practised extensively in Ghana while based in Edinburgh.

She theorised and built to a rigorous standard of social and environmental sustainability at every scale, and designed the Kokrobitey Institute.
