Abedi Pele

born 1964

European champion and three-time African Footballer of the Year

Why they are here

He was the first player to be named African Footballer of the Year three years running, and won the Champions League with Marseille in 1993 — among the first Africans to shape the European game.

Abedi Ayew, known as Abedi Pele, won the Africa Cup of Nations with Ghana in 1982 while still a teenager. As an attacking midfielder for Olympique de Marseille he became one of the first African players to make a decisive mark on European club football, winning the 1992–93 Champions League when Marseille beat AC Milan in the final in Munich.

He was named African Footballer of the Year in 1991, 1992 and 1993 — the first player to take the award three times in succession. He is the father of the footballers André and Jordan Ayew.
